Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Is underarm sweating/perspiration/odour significantly interfering with your daily activities, or damaging your clothing?

If topical agents haven't worked, you may be a candidate for treatment with a muscle relaxant injection*. It is important to see a dermatologist to discuss products and all treatment options.

The muscle relaxant is the same product used for facial cosmetic procedures, but in the treatment of hyperhidrosis perspiration it works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, which activates the sweat glands. The effects of the treatment are usually apparent within a week of treatment and generally control excess perspiration for up to nine months.

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is a chronic disorder that can affect any body part, including the underarms, the palms, the soles of the feet, and the face. Management of excess hand and foot perspiration is less successful, painful and more expensive. Our dermatologists may discuss other treatment options for these problems.

Now available with a Medicare rebate

The Australian Government Department of Human Services and Medicare offer a rebate scheme for people suffering from severe axillary hyperhidrosis. This rebate is only applicable if the treatment is carried out by a department approved Dermatologist using a muscle relaxant injection*.

Assoc.Prof Philip Bekhor was one of the first dermatologists in Melbourne to receive approval to treat patients with severe axillary hyperhidrosis under this special scheme.

As well as a Medicare rebate for the treatment, the government has also undertaken to fully cover the cost of the medication required (with only $41 payable by the patient to the Medicare designated pharmacy). This means that suitable patients will be entitled to treatment at an out of pocket cost of $390 (previously $1000).

If you have severe underarm sweating you may be eligible. For more information please phone 9890 1844 and ask for a “Hyperhidrosis consultation”. Note that you will require a written referral from your family doctor to be eligible for this item number.

miraDry® - First in Australia at Laser Dermatology

Laser Dermatology has performed many hundreds of treatments in the last 6 years– it is Australia's most experienced Miradry clinic.

miraDry® is a clinically proven, FDA and TGA approved solution for significantly reducing underarm sweat and odour . It’s an outpatient procedure performed in your dematologist's office, and it doesn’t involve any surgical incisions or cuts. miraDry® works by delivering precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the underarm area, eliminating the underarm sweat glands.

Most patients are sweat and odour free after a single treatment. For those who may need a second treatment, the fee is reduced.

miraDry® is the only procedure that provides a lasting reduction of underarm sweat and odor in a completely non-invasive way.

As with most new technology, miraDry® is not covered by Medicare. Similarly, as the procedure is performed in the Doctors office, private health insurance unfortunately doesn't apply.
